End Shackle

  • Function: An end shackle is a type of shackle used in lifting operations. In ship operations, it is typically placed at the very end of the cargo hold to secure and lift the cargo, ensuring safe transport.
  • Location: The end shackle is installed at the stern of the ship, maintaining a certain distance from the cargo. It usually consists of a chain, hook, or other securing device and can be adjusted as needed.
  • Usage: To use the end shackle, the chain or hook fixed to the end of the cargo hold is inserted into the shackle, then the shackle is locked to lift or lower the cargo. Typically, a crane and winch are used to operate the shackle for efficiency.

Anchor Shackle

  • Function: Anchor shackles are primarily used to secure the anchor chain of a ship. They fix the anchor chain in a specific position to ensure the ship does not drift or float.
  • Location: Anchor shackles are installed at the bow of the ship, usually inside the anchor box, and connected to the anchor chain. They can be adjusted to different positions and angles as needed.
  • Usage: To use an anchor shackle, the anchor chain is passed through the center hole of the shackle, and then the shackle is locked. Furthermore, the tension in the anchor chain can be controlled using a lowering hook and necessary hydraulic manipulation to ensure the chain is sufficiently secure to prevent the vessel from drifting.

In summary, while both end shackles and anchor shackles are shackles, they differ significantly in their usage, location, and function. Selecting the appropriate shackle based on actual needs can greatly improve the efficiency and safety of vessel operations.
