As a critical piece of equipment for ship navigation and berthing, the performance and condition of a ship's anchor winch directly affect its safety and stability. Accidents caused by inadequate anchor winch maintenance are common. For example, on November 1, 2024, a ship experienced a severe oil leak at the end cover seal of the hydraulic motor of its anchor winch during the weighing process, rendering it unable to continue weighing anchor. On November 20, 2023, the vessel PEH lost its starboard anchor and 12 sections of anchor chain while anchoring in deep water at a refueling anchorage in the Middle East due to slippage of the anchor winch brake band.

Routine maintenance includes checking the performance of the anchor winch brakes, clutch, hydraulic system, electrical equipment, anchor chain, and chain catcher, ensuring they are functioning smoothly and regularly removing rust and painting them. The anchor winch system should be maintained according to the requirements of the anchor winch manual. The anchor winch brake band should be replaced promptly, and the oil in the gearbox should be checked and changed regularly. The bolts securing the anchor winch and its base should be checked for looseness and corrosion. Wear on the anchor winch base should be repaired by removing rust and painting, and aged parts should be replaced promptly.
